The NCAA Lacrosse season is about to kick off and as fans get ready for the big games to start, we’re looking at who are the top 5 college players in the sport. There are a lot of good players that can play for teams in the college league but we’ve narrowed it down to these 5: Matt Brandau, Logan Wisnaus, Jessie Coffield, Brendan Nichtern, and Truit Sunderland. These are the players that you need to know about and be aware of.
jessie coffield
Jessie Coffield is one of the top college lacrosse players and is also a sports broadcaster. She is well known for her role as a television host for DraftKings Inc. and CBT News.
Before Coffield’s career in sports journalism, she played lacrosse and hockey in high school. She played midfield for the national prep powerhouse St. Stephens and St. Agnes School in Alexandria, Virginia. Her athletic talent led to numerous Division I athletic scholarship offers.
After college, Coffield pursued a career in sports journalism. She interned for the NHL hockey team Washington Capitals. The job offered her an opportunity to write about the team. It also gave her video segments for the team’s website. However, the position did not allow enough time for Coffield to build a career in sports journalism.
Brendan Nichtern
As an Army West Point lacrosse standout, Brendan Nichtern has been named one of the top 5 college lacrosse players in the nation. This honor comes from the Tewaaraton Award, which is awarded annually to the best collegian in the country.
Not only does he have a storied career in the military, but his stats are some of the best in the country. Among other things, he leads the nation in points per game, assists, goals, and assists per game.
He was a second-team All-American by USA Lacrosse Magazine in 2021. And he led the Chrome Lacrosse Club to a two-seed in the 2022 Cash App Playoffs.
In addition to his great college career, he was also selected as the ninth overall pick in the 2022 PLL Draft. Now, he’s the leader in points, assists, and goals for the Black Knights.
Matt Brandau
If you’re looking for a big time college lacrosse player, then Matt Brandau is your man. The former Boys’ Latin School of Maryland star scored in every game of his collegiate career. Now, he is a member of the defending national champion Yale Bulldogs. He’s a Tewaaraton candidate and is one of the top five college lacrosse players in the country.
When Matt first arrived at Yale, he was a freshman. However, he earned playing time as a sophomore and a junior. This year, he’s been a key member of the Bulldogs’ attack. He’s led the team to an 11-4 record and a share of the Ivy League regular season title.
His double hat trick against Cornell tied a program record. In addition, he earned Inside Lacrosse’s Reverent Player of the Week honors.
Logan Wisnaus
Wisnauskas is considered to be one of the top college lacrosse players in the nation. He is an attackman with a storied career. This year, Wisnauskas set records for points and assists in a season. He also broke the single-season record for goals.
After his graduation from Maryland, Wisnauskas will head to the professional league. As the number one draft pick in the PLL Draft, he was chosen by the Chrome Lacrosse Club.
Logan Wisnauskas is considered to have an incredible shot. He is the leading scorer for the Terrapins. His father, Andrew, was on the National Championship team in 1994. The elder Wisnauskas also played lacrosse at Salisbury College.
Wisnauskas’ athleticism was showcased in the 2022 NCAA Tournament, where he scored four goals in two games. He is one of the best offensive players in the nation and is expected to be an important part of the Terrapins’ future.
Truit Sunderland
Truitt Sunderland has been a key part of Calvert Hall’s incredible lacrosse program for several years. As a freshman, Sunderland was a fixture on the Calvert Hall roster, scoring 35 goals and 22 assists for the Cardinals.
But Sunderland’s rookie season was marred by an injury. In March, Sunderland suffered a foot fracture, which caused him to sit out the rest of the spring season. He returned to action last week, scoring 15 points in two wins for the Cardinals.
Sunderland is an outstanding offensive player, and he has the ability to play all six spots on the O. His speed makes him difficult to cover. However, Sunderland is also a smart player who has a knack for picking up the defense’s momentum and inspiring teammates.
